Boom Barrier Setup Guide for Apartments & Offices in Bangladesh
A boom barrier is the simplest way to control which vehicles enter your apartment complex, office tower or factory. But a barrier on its own is just a moving arm — what makes it useful (and safe) is how the whole lane is planned: the civil work, the way vehicles are identified, the safety sensors and the software behind it. This guide walks through what actually goes into a working parking barrier in Bangladesh.
1. Plan the lane first
Before buying anything, look at the lane itself:
- Width and approach — is there room for a car to stop, be identified and pass without blocking the road outside?
- Power — a stable supply (with backup for outages, which are common) so the barrier and readers stay online.
- Ground loop — a wire loop cut into the road under the barrier that detects a vehicle and auto-closes the arm only after the car has fully passed.
- Entry vs exit — decide whether you need one shared lane or separate in/out lanes for busier buildings.
Getting the civil layout right at the start avoids expensive rework later.
2. Choose the right barrier
Not all barriers are equal. For a building gate, look for:
- Speed — a fast boom (around 1.5 seconds) keeps traffic moving at busy times.
- Duty cycle — a brushless-motor barrier handles heavy, all-day use far better than a cheap one.
- Interchangeable arm direction — so the same unit fits left- or right-hand lanes.
- Manual release — the arm can be raised by hand during a power or device fault, so vehicles are never trapped.
3. Decide how vehicles are identified
This is the real heart of the system — how the barrier knows who to let in:
- ANPR / LPR camera reads the number plate. Great for visitors and for photo evidence of every entry.
- RFID / UHF tag on the windshield is matched by a long-range reader. Fastest and most reliable for regular residents and staff.
- Guard remote for manual override at the post.
For most Bangladesh buildings the strongest setup combines plate and tag (dual verification) so a misread plate is backed up by the tag, and a swapped tag is caught by the plate.
4. Build in safety
A barrier that can hit a car or a person is a liability. Proper systems keep the arm up while anything is underneath using:
- Induction loop detection,
- Infrared / radar anti-smash sensors, and
- Traffic lights (red by default, green on authorised open) so drivers always know the lane state.
These aren’t optional extras — they are what separate a safe installation from a dangerous one.
5. Add the software layer
Hardware controls the arm; software controls the policy. A good parking system gives you:
- A vehicle registry (plate, owner, tag, assigned zone),
- Access passes for residents, staff and visitors that can expire and be revoked,
- Zone and occupancy tracking with live capacity,
- Real-time barrier status and remote open/close/lock,
- Entry/exit reports with camera reference for any incident.
